Course Description:

This course will provide an in-depth study of the historic instructional poem al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah by Ibn al-Jazari of Damascus (8-9th century AH). This foundational text will guide students through a comprehensive introduction to the study of tajwid, including correct articulation (makharij) and characteristics (sifat) of Arabic letters, rules of elongation (madd), stopping and starting (waqf and ibtida’), and other technical aspects of Quranic recitation. By the end of the course, students will be able to proficiently read, understand, and explain the entire text of the poem. Students working on the memorization ijaza in TAJ 501 will also memorize and recite the poem from memory to their assigned tajwid teacher.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Students should be women above the age of 17.
  • TAJ 101 & 102: “Quran Fluency Parts 1 & 2”.
  • TAJ 201: “Tajwīd Part 1: Letters & Phonetics”.
  • TAJ 202: “Tajwīd Part 2: Rules & the Rhythm of Recitation”
  • TAJ 301: “Quran Khitmah Project”
  • TAJ 401: “The Crowning Venture: Quran Memorization”
  • Arabic Intermediate Beginner
  • Ability to read the Holy Quran fluently with full application of the rules of tajwīdand few errors.
  • Knowledge of the points of articulation (makhārij), letter attributes (ṣifāt), and all tajwīd rules.

Tajwid Placement:

Course Requirements: 

To be successful in this course, students need to attend the live class or watch the recordings and complete the coursework as defined in the course syllabus. This may include: weekly assignments or reflections, a term paper, project, or midterm, one or more quizzes, and/or a final exam.

Please note that daylight saving time will begin in the United States on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Depending on where you live, this may or may not affect your class timing. In countries where DST is not applied at all, class will be one hour later starting November 2.

This is an online course so students will need:

  • Access to internet with an internet speed of at least 2 Mbps recommended for best performance.
  • Headphones, camera and microphone may be required for in-class participation.
  • To access the live class and recordings, students will need a computer, smartphone, or tablet/iPad with the Zoom app.
