Arabic Novice Ab Initio

Course Description:

Ab initio level is designed to provide students with the ability to read the basic Arabic script (primary letters) with a full set of standard diacritics (harakāt). Students will be able to pronounce letters of the alphabet correctly, identify them in their written forms within words, and transcribe simple Arabic words with a good degree of accuracy. Students will know how to read words independently – skills for reading word strings (rather than letter strings) will be developed in further modules. Students will learn a range of basic phrases and some high frequency vocabulary items.

Course Prerequisites:

Students should be women above the age of 17.

Placement:

Course Requirements:

Students are expected to attend 2 online classes each week, complete weekly assignments, submit a personal project and a final exam.

Live attendance is recommended whenever possible for the best learning experience. Recordings of the sessions will be made available for registered students who cannot attend live. Students will have access to course forums, recordings, and files until August 31, 2026.

This is an online course so students will need:

• Access to internet with an internet speed of at least 2 Mbps recommended for best performance.
• Headphones, camera and microphone may be required for in-class participation.
• To access the live class and recordings, students will need a computer, smartphone, or tablet/iPad with the Zoom app.
