This is the first module of the Advanced Middle band. In this level, learners will read voweled texts with complete fluency and a high level of accuracy and read non-voweled texts with ease and a good level of accuracy. They will understand the main idea and supporting details of authentic narrative and descriptive texts, as well as more complex factual material, with minimal external support. They will compensate for limitations in lexical and structural knowledge by using contextual clues, dictionary skills, and solid grammatical knowledge, and—when familiar with the subject—derive meaning from straightforward argumentative texts (e.g., recognize the main argument). They will demonstrate independence with new subject matter, showing control of standard linguistic conventions for sequencing, time frames, and chronology. They will use a root dictionary to access derivatives and provide nuanced translations of short texts, using vocabulary found in classical/ liturgical, as well as more modern, texts.
